Yes, it’s true, the Standard American Diet (SAD), or the diet we typically eat as Americans, is the number one cause of death in the US because it leads to heart disease, also known as hypertension.
Numerous studies have found this to be true and I’ll offer links to some of those for reference. For example, in the early 1900’s, the top three causes of death were pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrheal disease. Today, the top causes are heart disease, cancer, accidents, chronic lung disease and stroke (CDC). The change is attributed to a dramatic change in diet, namely, “a diet dominated by animal-sourced and processed foods—in other words, more meat, dairy, eggs, oils, soda, sugar, and refined grains”. (“How Not To Die” – Dr. Michael Gregor, page 5)
So, since what we eat is a choice we make, it follows that once we realize this truth, we can also choose to change what we eat, in order to improve our health. Sounds simple, even logical, but we’ve come to realize it’s more difficult than it sounds. This has been our motivation for putting up our website – to help by sharing information about solutions that are known to work and to reassure people that they can do it, if they really want to do so.
We all need a little help now and then and this is what we’re offering at SpiralUpHealth.com. But remember this, we’re not suggesting an all or nothing approach to changing your diet. In fact, we don’t even think of it as a diet at all – it’s more of a lifestyle change. Gradual, little by little changes to your diet that will improve your health. Go as fast or as slowly as you like. It’s your choice!
